What You Should Know About PEF MBP’s Benefits
The benefits and the benefit providers are chosen and endorsed by the PEF Membership Benefits Program. All benefit providers undergo an extensive provider investigation followed by a thorough review and approval process conducted by the board of Trustees. Benefit programs are monitored on a regular basis to ensure that PEF MBP is providing quality benefits/plans. Benefit suggestions are always welcome.
No Cost Benefits
Active, dues-paying PEF members automatically receive these benefits, at no cost, as a part of their membership.
$15,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D)
- Accidental Death Coverage
An accidental death benefit of $15,000 will be payable if a member’s death occurs as a direct result of an accidental bodily injury sustained while insured, provided that the death occurs within 365 days of the accident.
- Accidental Dismemberment
Accidental dismemberment pays a benefit if, while insured, the member suffers a bodily injury caused by a covered accidental injury and if, within 365 days after the accident, the member loses a hand, foot, or eye as a direct result of the injury.
Assault, Trauma & Attack Coverage (ATAC)
The ATAC policy insures the trauma associated with a criminal assault, as defined by the New York Penal Code, or a captive situation while the member is pursuing his/her occupational job duties. Claims must be submitted within two (2) years of the incident date. Discharge of Official Weapon Benefit
Coverage provided for PEF members who are subject to a criminal investigation as a direct result of the discharge of their official, employer-issued (or approved) weapon, which occurred while the member is acting within the scope of his/her New York State employment or duties.Learn more

Financial Planning & Credit Counseling
PEF members and retirees are entitled to a FREE, annual, one-hour, personal consultation and comprehensive financial overview with a Stacey Braun Associates Certified Financial Planner® or Registered Investment Advisor whose fee is paid for by the PEF Membership Benefits Program. Financial advice is objective because the representatives do not sell products. Members receive a written summary of recommendations.Learn more
Justice Center Benefit
A special benefit for PEF members working in agencies under Justice Center Jurisdiction. Available to those members notified that they are the subject of a criminal investigation or subject of a substantiated report.Learn more
Legal Defense Benefit
A benefit for active, dues-paying members of PEF, charged with a crime that was committed while working, during the course of employment in a PS&T Unit position. Receive up to a $2,000 cash benefit when the most serious charge is a misdemeanor and up to $5,000 when the most serious charge is a felony. Terms and conditions apply.Learn more
Sun Life Insurances
Insurance programs, made available through Sun Life Financial, are available to newly hired employees in the PS&T unit with no medical questions asked (i.e., no medical questionnaire is required to enroll), if the new hire joins PEF and enrolls in these insurance programs within 240 days from their date of hire. Insurances are available to PEF members after 240 days as well, but the PEF member must also complete and submit an Evidence of Insurability form.
- Group Term Life Insurance—coverage of up to 5 times earnings, spousal/domestic partner coverage up to $100,000, and $15,000 per eligible dependent coverage.
- Short-Term Disability—pays a weekly benefit of $100 to $700 for up to 26 weeks, depending on the option selected. Important to note: New York State employees are not covered by disability insurance through the State of New York.
- Long-Term Disability—provides a monthly benefit (up to 50% or 60% of a member’s monthly income, based on the salary on file at the time of the disability, up to $7,500/month) to a member who, due to illness or injury, is unable to work for an extended period of time. Benefits start 6 months after a disability begins and continue as long as the member is totally disabled (as defined by the policy), up to age 65.
Aflac offers the following insurance policies to active, dues-paying PEF members through payroll deduction:
- Accident Indemnity Advantage Plan—a 24-hour accident-only insurance that pays a set benefit amount, per covered occurrence. Coverage is dependent on the level of treatment the insured receives (this is not disability insurance).
- Cancer Care/Specified Disease—pay cash benefits upon initial diagnosis of a covered cancer, with other benefits payable throughout treatment.

Continuing Education Units (free with a Voluntary Legal Service Plan purchase)
The PEF Membership Benefits Program makes available continuing education courses with the support of Feldman, Kramer & Monaco, P.C. Law Firm, provider of the Voluntary Legal Service Plan benefit. Continuing education units (CEUs) are required for PS&T unit employees in the positions of social worker, certified case manager (if certified via PACE), and registered nurse (if certified via ANCC). With the purchase of the Voluntary Legal Service Plan, members who are in these professional positions are entitled to participate in 6 hours of continuing education annually, at no additional cost.Learn more
